The Vermont Earth Institute (VEI) has been bringing people together to raise their ecological awareness and inspiring action to adopt sustainable practices for the past 15 years. Bike Recycle Vermont offers a comprehensive training program focusing on bicycle repair and maintenance geared towards elementary age learners and beyond. From introductory lessons on basic tool usage to incrementally scaffolded lessons in advanced procedures requiring specialized tools and equipment, students will not only learn how bicycles work, but how mechanical devices of all shapes and sizes function. With an emphasis on ecologically sustainable practices, Bike Recycle Vermont provides a working knowledge of environmentally friendly transportation that is not only fun, but healthy for the individual and community as well. Students enrolled in our program learn how community excess (donated bicycles and supplies) is matched to community needs (affordable transportation and recreation). Bike Recycle Vermont is the vehicle by which raw donated goods are transformed into roadworthy, life-affirming mechanisms that serve a variety of utilitarian function. With core lessons in reduce, reuse, and recycle modalities, we also encourage artistic expression with the multitudinous parts that are no longer appropriate for bicycle building and repair. Work stools, wind chimes, mobiles, and earrings are just a few of the items fashioned from discarded bike parts by our participants. Students are only limited by their wide ranging imaginations.

The Burlington Lead Program is dedicated to the prevention of childhood lead poisoning through the reduction of lead-based paint hazards in homes. Children are typically poisoned through lead-based paint dust which can be invisible yet the biggest danger to their health. We are funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to offer services to Burlington and Winooski homeowners, landlords and tenants. We provide educational resources in a variety of ways as well as free visual risk assessment of the interior and exterior of homes, free advice of lead safety and potential risks, free use of HEPA vacuums and free Essential Maintenance Practice classes for landlords to comply with the VT lead law. The Healthy Homes Project is an organizing project that engages
tenants and low-income parents in identification of environmental
hazards in their homes and neighborhoods and civic participation to
secure policies that will reduce or eliminate such hazards. We would
be happy to work with teachers to integrate this into curriculum in
any way.

The VWC Education Committee has a wide range of educational modules
and videos (most designed for adult education but potentially
adaptable for elementary education) on work, economic inequality,
racism, immigration, and people's history (the history of workers and
marginalized people, and the movements that they built). We could
provide these tools to help with curriculum development, work with
teachers on curriculum development, and/or provide speakers on these
topics.

We also have a few children's books that deal with work, racism and
movement history.

Julie and Lesley drafted a template for partnering proposals. Submitted here for your feedback-

The discussion centered around what else was needed in this form. The description should include activities and expected outcomes. The resources need to specify who is responsible for supplying. There needs to be some indication of the level of partnership sought. We will add an introductory page describing(1.) the levels of partnership (Tiffany has a chart) and (2.) the steps for establishing a partnership ( proposal goes to individual teacher then to our committee or it will go directly to our committee.
We will use guidelines (to be established) for evaluating the proposal and then send it on to the transformation committe with our recommendation.
We will work on establishing our guidelines for evaluating partnerships ( e.g. is the agency and its goals in line with our mission?)
It was also agreed that this committee needs to warehouse all information about all outside resources being used in the school, though we do not need formal partnership agreements for those short term, limited participation, alliances.

Tiffany and Kathy are working on inputing the resources info on the WIKI.

Lesley raises the issue of the need for greater clarity around the partnership with Shelburne Farms. As our major partner, we all need the definitions of that partnership and the parameters of the relationships, roles, expectations, funding.... This will be addressed in Tuesday's staff meeting. (P.S. it was not, but will be at a future staff meeting).

Resources data base - Tiffany and Kathy will work to have the basics entered by the end of June. Additions will continue after that time.

Partnerships - Tiffany shared powerpoint presentations on partnering. We will work to post some of the information on a page within this site and we will establish a library of materials in Tewk's room. The book "Building School and Community Partnerships" by Sanders, was recommended. Tewks will look into purchasing. Champlain College and Vt. Commons School have each made proposals for partnering, but they are more at a resources level , so individual teachers can respond. Lesley and Julie will work to create a template for proposing a partnership, to be posted on this site. The committee will draw up the steps for establishing a partnership with the school.

Tiffany has volunteered to take on the job of writing the master list of resources. She is working to make it user friendly, easily accessed and well organized. It will be entered under this committee heading, on a sub heading, so it can be added to . We spent the rest of the meeting talking about possible partnerships. We defined them as long term with a min. time commitment (1 year?), school wide, reciprocal and having a complementary mission (4E's).
Partnerships needed now at the outset, may be different from what is needed further down the road. Tiffany suggests that we need a partner now to help us with reviewing and improving our campus practices. We will come up with a partnership proposal for the community to respond to in the next meeting.
